A working visit to the Khorezm region was organized for representatives of the Islamic Development Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the Association of Mahallas of Uzbekistan, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The purpose of the visit was to review the progress of activities under the Sustainable Rural Development Project, participate in inauguration ceremonies of newly constructed facilities, and familiarize themselves with the opportunities being created for local residents.
The visit began with a meeting between the regional khokim, Jurabek Rakhimov, and representatives of donor organizations. During the discussion, the parties reviewed the region’s economic indicators, its unique characteristics, and the priority areas requiring further development.
As part of the Sustainable Rural Development Project, large-scale activities are being implemented in 49 mahallas across six districts of Khorezm – Gurlan, Yangibozor, Urgench, Khonqa, Bagat, and Hazorasp. Based on the "bottom-up" approach, residents of these mahallas selected 208 priority subprojects across 14 thematic areas. These include the construction and rehabilitation of schools, kindergartens, and medical facilities; improvements to drinking water and electricity systems; and the repair of local roads, bridges, irrigation, and drainage networks. Forty cluster-based Mahalla Development Plans were prepared to guide these efforts. The project is expected to benefit nearly 180,000 rural residents.
As part of the visit, the delegation attended the inauguration ceremony of a new three-storey Mahalla and Community Services Center in the Yuqoriovul mahalla of the Urgench district. The center will serve the residents of the Yuqoriovul, Merganovul, Jayhun, and Uyshin mahallas.
The center was built to replace an outdated public services building and now offers the following facilities and services:
- Administrative Offices for the Mahalla Citizens’ Assembly;
- classrooms and training rooms;
- a library and reading spaces;
- tailoring workshops;
- sports and fitness areas;
- men’s and women’s hair salons;
- a bakery and small retail outlets;
- household appliance repair services;
- a beauty salon and dry-cleaning services.
The center will create new jobs, expand income-generating opportunities for local residents, and provide modern learning and entrepreneurship spaces for youth.
The delegation also visited the Uyshin mahalla, where a new state preschool – Preschool Education Institution No. 32, designed for 150 children – was inaugurated with the participation of the local community. The total cost of the facility amounted to 4.6 billion UZS, and construction works were carried out by Sarvinoz Lyuks Trans LLC.
Approximately 3,000 residents from seven villages live in the Uyshin mahalla. Previously, the mahalla did not have a state kindergarten, which limited access to early childhood education and reduced employment opportunities for women with young children. The new preschool, expected to open its doors in the coming days, will provide children with improved learning and development conditions and offer families greater social convenience.
